Ashmore Estates - Coles County Poor Farm Cemetery


Coles County Poor Farm Cemetery (Grave sites from late 1800's through late 1940's)

Coles County like most counties in Illinois had a poor farm from sometime in the 1800's through 1956. During that time the residents lived in buildings called Almshouses. Three Almshouses existed on the property of the current Ashmore Estates. Many of the residents were of poor health or were elderly. Most likely more than 100 persons died in the almshouses in Coles County. Most were interred in the Coles County Poor Farm Cemetery. The cemetery is on private property today and the owner of the property does not want visitors on his property. Please honor this request of his. He did allow me to go over to the cemetery one time. While I was there we photographed all of the stones I could with the help of one of the kin to Joe Bloxom (grave marker 3e below), his Great-Great Grand Niece Betty Van Leer.
